Was there any indication of whether or not the larger posts (for example in the hypostyle hall) were carved?

Wondering if they might have been the forerunners of the stone papyriform columns of later days?

Hi John,

Thanks for reading! The posts could have been imported from Nubia or elsewhere, but keep in mind that at this time the local climate was wetter. The surrounding area would have been more savannah-like, allowing for trees large enough for the smaller fence-like posts, while the larger timber could have been brought from elsewhere.

Cheers!

Great article that provides much interesting and new information on this ancient city. Any ideas about the posts? So many holes! Presumably required a large number of trees. Where did they come from? Local climate (4-5 inches of rain per year?) doesn't seem like a forest-type climate. Could the logs have come downriver from Nubia?

Dr. Friedman,

Thank you so much for reading the article, and yes Hierakonpolis is very much of interest. The next article will pick up in Hierakonpolis before jumping to Abydos, but I definitely have a new appreciation for the early proto-dynastic kings/chieftains who preceded Narmer.

Thank you also for your clarifications about the palisade wall and the role of HK34 as the administrative center. You can be sure we will be following you work closely and reporting back to here. I would be more than glad to link to the new website. I can even see a short introductory article here on Em Hotep to help build awareness and support. We could use that as an opportunity to let Em Hotep readers know how they can support your work.

I look forward to the next chapter in the Hierakonpolis Expedition!

Cheers,

I am happy to see that Hierakonpolis and all of our work there is considered of interest (as indeed it is). I just wish to state that the palisade wall does not necessarily surround HK34 (an area I would dearly like to explore more thoroughly--a matter of funding), but at present is only documented around HK29B, which also incorporate the ceremonial center at HK29A. I feel that the stress on HK34 as the center of the administration of the town is just too much of an unknown. What the mysterious stone mounds are, are still unclear and the material from the immediate area is not very informative about function. Otherwise, you have presented the thrust of our hard won discoveries well. We are in the process of updating our website, once completed it would be nice if you would link it in so readers might be directed there and possibly support our work.
Thanks
