Twenty-Third Dynasty

The Libyan Federation of Egypt

The Twenty-Third Dynasty consists of separate lines of Libyan provincial leaders, with the Theban Priesthood of Amun playing a significant role in the early years.  This dynasty overlaps the Twenty-Second and Twenty-Forth Dynasties, and some self-declared pharaohs overlap others within the Twenty-Third Dynasty from other provinces.   However, the situation may not have been as chaotic as it first appears.  The relative stability suggests a degree of co-operation amongst the differing provinces, which may have functioned more as a federation than as a fractured state.
