Nomadic tribes begin to settle into permanent villages during the Predynastic Period. Permanent communities allow the development of stone working, pottery, jewelry, and a rudimentary form of writing. Three primary city-states develop—Naqada, Thinis, and Nekhen. By the end of this period Egypt developed into two kingdoms, the Red Kingdom in the north and the White Kingdom in the south.
