The rise of the Hyksos combined with increasing challenges from the western delta region dragged the unlucky Thirteenth Dynasty into Egypt’s Second Intermediate Period. While the official capitol of this dynasty was Memphis, provincial rulers once again had free reign of their local areas. Many kings of the Fourteenth and even Fifteenth Dynasties overlapped with the Thirteenth Dynasty, and in the end pressures from the Hyksos proved to too much for the central government to hold.

The last king to be attributed with ruling all of Egypt in the Thirteenth Dynasty was Ay I (Merneferre Ay), who ruled from Avaris.
